"Unguarded" Three-Point Shots (Advanced Game)

I have always found it odd that the Strat-O-Matic basketball game has rules that increase the FG% for Outside and Inside shots taken by players who are left unguarded (when a shooter's defender is participating in a double-team against another offensive player) but does not increase the FG% for three-point shots attempted by players who are left unguarded. 😕 Well, I decided to rectify that, and then some, with the following suggested rule adjustments:

If a player is left unguarded due to his defender participating in a double-team against another player OR whose defender is the designated inside block man, an X roll on the special black die does not result in an automatic missed three-point shot. Instead, treat the X roll the same as a Blank roll instead, reading the result of the shot attempt from the shooter’s 3-Pt. Shooting section.

Using this rule adjustment, one can no longer ignore the three-point shooting ability of players when making decisions on who to leave unguarded when employing a double-team or when choosing which player to be the defensive inside block man.

  1. What about a defender contesting a 3-point shot with his x-column rating? Isn't there a way to incorporate this aspect as well?

    1. For these specific instances, left unguarded due to a double-team or the defender being the designated inside block man, you certainly could but I would think it unrealistic. Three-point shots are already misses on an X roll, regardless of whether or not a 3-pt. shooter is double-teamed, and the designated inside block man, regardless of how well they defend against outside shooting, would never be able to affect a three-point shot while still playing close enough to the basket to block inside and penetration shots.

If you're speaking generally though, there are probably several ways to incorporate a defender contesting a three-point shot with his X column rating. For example, you could have a rule where if a shooter attempting a three is open due to a "Switch..." or an "OPEN shot..." reading from the Normal Control section of an action card, then refer to the defender's X column reading, instead of an automatic miss, to determine whether or not the shot was made or missed.

Another example would be to refer to the defender's X column reading, instead of an automatic miss, whenever a three-point shooter has an open shot other than from a double-team or being defended by the defensive inside block man, to determine whether or not the shot was made or missed.
