Solitaire Game Play Options Update

The Solitaire Game Play Options document has been updated. The main change is in regard to the Determining Shot Type rules. In the previous version, if a player rated to shoot from both outside and inside did not attempt a three-point or penetration shot in certain situations, then a die roll against the shooting stars would determine whether or not an outside or inside shot would be attempted. That has been changed to a straight 50/50 chance of the player attempting an outside or inside shot, regardless of the number of shooting stars the player has.

In the previous versions, if a *I rated player, for instance, did not attempt a three-point or penetration shot, then there was an 83% chance that the player would attempt an inside shot and a 17% chance he would attempt an outside shot. A ****I rated player would have a 33% chance of attempting an inside shot and a 67% chance of attempting an outside shot in these situations. Obviously, when we get to the point where an Outside/Inside rated shooter may have an outside or inside shot, there should be a 50/50 chance of either occurring. 😣

Other changes were the fixing of typos and/or poor wording in the text in certain sections of the document. The new version is now available for download from the X Files section.

  1. Hi Chris, your solitaire rules are great. I had some of my own and many of yours line up with what I was thinking especially around the frequency of 3 points shots. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the DAZZLER. Do you just let that play out or have you thought about incorporating the 3 point frequency with that?

Also, I was contemplating on how the assists could be redone especially for players like Nicola Jokic who probably won't average 10 assist in this board game play. I've had similar issues with Dramond Green with his assist down from his average (in some seasons).

Anyways, nicely done. I've been looking for other opinions on house rules for strat basketball. This is the best and very happy to know it many aspects were inline with how I am playing the game.

  2. Thank you. Interestingly enough, I started thinking about Dazzlers affecting the frequency of three-point shot attempts a week or so ago. What I had been doing previously is counting Dazzler results as an automatic two-point basket, as per the Strat-O-Matic rules booklet, and disregarding whether the D20 result indicated a three-point shot attempt (per the Determining Shot Type rule from the Solitaire Game Play Options).

Total three-point shot attempts in my games were pretty close to actual because the three-point attempts lost to Dazzler results were for the most part made up by the taking additional three-point shots when the D20 did not indicate a three-point shot when a [Position] Pass to Any Player for Position Shot or "Switch" reading occurred, and also from three-point shots taken when the D20 did not indicate a three-point attempt when a team trail by 3 or more points with two or fewer minutes remaining in a game.

The new rule that I am currently testing, in my 2023 Division III Tournament, has me checking the D20 when a Dazzler result occurs to see if the shooter will attempt a three-point shot. If a three-point shot is attempted from a Dazzler result, then it will be treated as an unguarded three-point shot attempt (as per the Solitaire Game play Options). In addition, the D20 and/or green and red dice will be consulted on "Switch" results to determine what type of shot a player attempts. If I like the results, I will update the SGPO document with the new rule.

As for high assist forwards and centers not getting enough assists, I haven't ever thought about addressing that issue in the game as of yet, but maybe someday in the future.
